Bugs: Automation Error error messages, unable to change/save/delete a database object

Author(s)

(Q) All of a sudden in Access 95, I'm unable to save changes to a form/report/module

I keep getting error messages like "Data Error", "Operation Stopped" or blank boxes with an OK button.

I'm unable to view a form. I keep getting "Automation Error" message every now and then. I've tried compacting, repairing, exporting all objects to a new database. Still this error remains.

What's happening??

(A) This error is caused by a bug in the original Jet engine that shipped with Access 95 and is caused by a corrupt object. The only resolution to this problem is to import all _good_ objects to a new database and either re-create the corrupt object or restore it from a good backup. To determine which object is corrupt, I've found one method to usually work. Follow these steps:

Create a copy of the database.

In this _COPY_, start deleting one object at a time, starting with forms.

Eventually, you should come across a module/report/form that remains in the database window even after multiple tries to delete it. This is a corrupt object. Don't stop here as it's possible you have more than one object corrupt. Continue with these steps till you're verify all good objects.

ACC95: Updated Jet DLLs for Access 95 and Jet 3.0 Available in Download Center

Download the MSJTWNG.EXE file. Apply the Jet engine patch to make sure that this problem doesn't occur again. After applying the patch, create a new database and import all good objects from the corrupt database. You'll have to recreate the corrupt object in this new database.
